John 14:7-14
Acts 13:44-52 / Ps 98:1-4
Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me . . .
(John 14: 11)
It is futile to wrack our mind,
God on earth is a mystery;
It’s in heaven where we will find
The essence of the Trinity.
The scene is at the last supper of our Lord with his apostles in the upper room. Many questions were still in their minds. “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” (14:5.) “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” (14:8.) Patiently, Jesus enlightened them: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father… whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”
Reflection
Although it was difficult for the followers of Jesus to understand His words, they had readily accepted that He was indeed the Son of God, by the power of the words that issued from His lips, and the wonders that He peformed. But to be able to see the Father in Jesus Himself, as when Jesus said, “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father,” was a mystery of Oneness that needed wisdom only the Holy Spirit could give. But our Lord knew that He had to make their faith strong first before they could receive the Holy Spirit. So Jesus assured them that those who would believe could work wonders like Him. “Amen, amen I say to you, whoever believes in Me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father” (Jn.14:12). By leaving them, the Father would send the Holy Spirit.
As with His apostles, Jesus also promised us the fullness of the Holy Spirit in our lives. He said, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of Truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, because He remains with you, and will be within you.” (Jn.14:16-17) It is to develop a personal relationship with Him that Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to each one of us. We have done many things that we never imagined we could do before when we had not yet accepted the Holy Spirit in our life.
Lord, help me to know you better, that I may discover Your plan in my life. Help me to believe even if I still cannot understand Your ways, because they are way beyond our ways, as the heavens are far above the earth. Give us the grace to understand that it is enough that You have given us this Faith in Jesus Christ Amen.
