Witness of God’s Word

John 17: 1-11a
Acts 20: 17-27 / Psa 68

Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.
(John 17:3)

By words and deeds we testify
As Jesus Christ we glorify;
Live what we preach, His Word proclaim,
That we’ll be worthy of His Name.

Jesus looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. 4I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. 5So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.” (John 17:1-11)

To gain eternal life means to have knowledge about the Father through Jesus Christ. All the teachings that our Lord passed on to His disciples, and spoken directly to us from Holy Scriptures cannot lead us to greater understanding of the Father’s will unless we read the Bible regularly and prayerfully (at least 15 minutes every day) and reflect on the messages as they apply to our daily experiences.

Some witnesses are hand-picked by the Holy Spirit “out of the world.” Having received God’s Word in Jesus Christ, they have been chosen to spread His Good News of salvation to others. Their faith entails action. They claim true fellowship with Jesus by breaking free from their comfort zones to be counted in the work of evangelization. In spite of their pains and trials, or because of them, they are God’s most effective heralds of His Word.

One of them is a sister in our brotherhood, whose life testimony cut us to the heart. For many years she has been in and out of the hospital due to various ailments that wrack her frail body. Diabetes, asthma, cardiac palpitations, hypertension, allergies to various foods, and a host of other pains routinely plague her as she struggles (and excels) in her academic pursuits (teaching while finishing her doctoral thesis). The Word of God in Scripture sustains her, especially her favorite, the Book of Psalms. Her many afflictions have reduced her almost to skin and bones, but her doctor husband claims that she is his “pillar of strength.” Quoting verses from Psalms, she praised and exalted God for including her in His Fellowship of the Cross. This sister is a model for us all; we believe she is God-sent to make us understand the true meaning of faith.

Through the testimonies of Your loving servants we have come to know Your will, Lord God, and have been inspired to follow their example. Strengthen them with your Spirit, so that their work of evangelization may continue to bring more souls to Your flock. Amen.
