Opening Up for Jesus

Luke 24: 35-48
Acts 3: 11-26 / Psa 8

“You are witnesses of these things.”
(Luke 24:48)

What kind of witnesses are we?
Why are we troubled and in doubt?
Let Jesus in and we shall see
All our weaknesses and fears fly out.

Then they told what had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread. As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them. But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave Him a piece of broiled fish, and He took it and ate before them. Then He said to them, “These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”

Reflection

The two disciples to whom Jesus had appeared on the road to Emmaus were relating their experience to the apostles when the Lord suddenly appeared in their midst. They were so startled and unbelieving that Jesus had to ask for something to eat in order to show them that He was indeed in the flesh before them, and not a ghost.

Then He opened their minds and revealed everything to them about Himself as prophesied in the Scriptures from the time of Moses and the prophets. He said to them: “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins in His name would be preached to all the nations, beginning with Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things” (Lk.24:45-48).

Most of us feel “at home” in the renewal because it is in our community that we can truly open up to witness on God’s transforming power in our life. A few weeks after we finished our nine-week Christian Life Program to become full members of the Brotherhood, we were asked to share our life testimony in one of our breakfast meetings. We were instructed by our elders to use Bible passages as reference for our life’s sharing. We discovered how fulfilling it was to open up about our faith, and how joyful to be inspired by the Holy Spirit to deliver God’s message through our sharing. It was then that we realized how fortunate are those so privileged to proclaim the Word of God in their assemblies.

It is the Scriptures that enable us to understand God’s ways, and it is our faith in God that makes us keep going back to Scriptures. How pitiable are those who do not open their Bibles to know more about God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Their minds will always remain closed, and the grace of God’s understanding and wisdom will not be able to enter their hearts.

We thank you, Lord God, for giving us the Holy Scriptures as the guidebook of our life. Your Word is a comfortable cushion to fall back on in times of crises and difficulties. It provides us wisdom, consolation, and understanding, that enable us to persevere in our faith, and to hope that all things will come out for the good, for all who believe in Your Word. Amen.
