The Way to the Father

John 14: 1-6
Acts 13: 26-33 / Psa 2

I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
(John 14:6)

Christ Jesus is the only Way,
This vital Truth we all should know;
His Word’s our nourishment each day,
For our Spiritual Life to grow.

(Jesus said), “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:1-6)

Reflection

Jesus Christ is our Way to the Father, and there is no other. He is the Truth, and others who proclaim otherwise will be proven false. He is Life Eternal – without Him, there can only be death and damnation. Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many rooms. if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.” (Jn.14:1-2).

While meditating on these words at the Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague one Friday morning, this thought came to mind: ‘Only the chosen will go to heaven, but because of God’s goodness, fewer still will go to hell.’ What was this strange thought telling me? Did it mean that majority of souls will just be extinguished? As Jesus said, “many are invited, but only a few are chosen.” (Mt.22:14) It was certainly not in God’s plan that more souls would be languishing in hell than rejoicing in heaven.

In His Father’s house Jesus will only welcome the faithful, as we would only invite the most select friends into our home. Not a great multitude will follow the Way of the Lord. After all, how many people can avoid adultery, anger, blasphemy, covetousness, divorce, envy, falsehood, greed, hedonism, and all the sins on earth that can be classified from A to Z? Besides, millions of these victims of the evil one probably never seriously regarded the gravity of their sins against the Truth of Holy Scriptures, much less encountered Jesus as the true Path to eternal life. Jesus said, “If you do not believe in me, you will die in your sins” (Jn.8:24). Death is definitely more preferable than an eternity in hell. In my human understanding, this is the only way I can reconcile God’s mercy with the reality of hell: the few who will fall into eternal damnation can only be those who choose to deny the Divine Mercy of God, who prefer darkness instead of light. These are the ones whom our Lord said would be judged by their own decision.

Father most loving, because of Your great compassion we find comfort in the thought that our Lord Jesus has prepared accommodations for us in Your home, and as long as we remain faithful to Him and His Word, our hearts will never be troubled. Amen.
