Our Firm Foundation

Matthew 7: 21, 24-27
Is 26: 1-6 / Ps 118: 1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27

Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
(Matthew 7:24)

Nothing to fear in evil’s wake,
Your Word, O Lord, is our firm foundation;
No rains or flood, or winds can break
Our faith in Your loving protection.

“Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven…” “Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rains fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house, but it did not collapse, because it had been set solidly on rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rains fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed, and was completely ruined.” (Matthew 7: 21, 24-27)

Reflection

God is the Rock upon Whom everything in our life depends. One of my favorite songs of praise in our Brotherhood goes, “Ascribe greatness to our God, the Rock, His work is perfect, and all His ways are just…” The lyrics of this song were taken from the book of Deuteronomy, 32:4. Moses, who wrote these words, developed such an intimate relationship with Yahweh that his faith in Him became as indestructible as solid rock. He was aware that the great pyramids of Egypt were constructed of granite rocks, and they were works of beauty, durability and perfection. But saying, “His work is perfect”, Moses also implied God’s justice, truth, and righteousness. These are the qualities of character that Jesus wants us to build within us when He said, “Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt. 5:48).

Jesus was referring to Himself when He said, “Upon this rock I will build my church” (Mt.16:18). We, the followers of Christ, continue to build up His Church by obedience to His Word, (God’s Will), practicing His values of justice, honesty and righteousness in our lives.

St. Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, said it so aptly: “Each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work” (1Cor.3:10b-13). Yes, it is in the fire of trials that our faith will be tested and purified. And no amount of gold, silver or precious stones can ever be more valuable a foundation as our faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ. Only a fool would put his trust on the riches of this world, which can never guarantee perpetual security and stability. No other foundation but Jesus can guarantee that. May His teachings and the Father’s commands be the rule of our lives.

Lord God, we praise and thank You for “transforming us by the renewing of our minds” (Rom. 12:2), with the hope and assurance that You will always be the Rock in our lives, against which no evil force can ever prevail. Amen.
