The Father is the Son

John 14: 7-14
Acts 13:44-52 / Psa 98

Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me…
(John 14: 11)

I believe in God Trinitarian,
Father, Holy Spirit and Son;
This creed is what makes me a Christian:
All three Persons in God are one.

Jesus said to His disciples: “If you know me, you will know my Father too. From this moment you know Him and have seen Him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and then we shall be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father, so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? What I say to you I do not speak of my own accord: it is the Father, living in me, who is doing His works. You must believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe it on the evidence of these works. In all truth I tell you, whoever believes in me will perform the same works as I do myself, and will perform even greater works, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:7-14)

These words of our Lord must have been difficult to absorb for the first followers of Jesus who, from their youth had always been taught in their synagogues that there was only one God, Yahweh, the God of Abraham and the God of Jacob. Readily they had accepted His word that He was indeed a Son of God, by the power of the words that came from His lips, and the wonders that He performed. But to be able to see the Father in Jesus Himself, as when Jesus said, “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father,” was a mystery of Oneness that needed wisdom only the power of the Holy Spirit could provide. However, our Lord knew that He had to strengthen their faith first before they could receive the Holy Spirit. So Jesus encouraged those who would believe that they too could work wonders like Him. “Amen, amen I say to you, whoever believes in Me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:12)

In our search for the truth in our faith, we are confronted by a blind alley when we try to understand the mystery of the Blessed Trinity. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are three distinct Persons in one distinct God. There is only One God, as the Holy Spirit is God, and springs from the love of the Father and the Son. Jesus is the Son of God, the Word of God, Who was since the beginning God Himself (John 1:1). In our early faith immersion in the brotherhood, we learned what God is like by asking who Jesus Christ is. But understanding the talks presented to us only came through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Father God, in our desire to know You and Your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus fully, we meditate on Your Sacred Word, and we receive You in the Holy Eucharist of the Mass. You have given us Your Holy Spirit, Who in our prayers and supplications has gifted us with knowledge, and a discerning heart. We praise and thank You, Lord that You have led us to our renewal Community, where we have come to believe in the great mystery of our salvation. Help us to believe even if we still cannot comprehend Your ways, because they are way beyond our ken, as the heavens are above the earth. Help us to understand that it is enough that You have given us this Faith in Jesus Christ. Amen.
