Let Your Light Shine

Luke 8:16-18
Prv 3: 27-34/ Ps 15: 2-5

No one who lights a lamp conceals it in a vessel or puts it under a bed. Rather, he puts it on a lamp stand, so that those who enter may see the light.
(Luke 8:16)

Beyond the proof of evidence,
Have faith God’s Word will be fulfilled;
Not by human intelligence,
The light of truth will be revealed.

(Jesus said to His disciples,) “No one who lights a lamp conceals it in a vessel, or puts it under a bed. Rather, he puts it on a lamp stand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light. Therefore, consider closely how you listen. To those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.” (Luke 8:16-18)

Reflection

In Matthew’s Gospel version, our Lord Jesus said, “You are the light of the world… your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Mt.5:14,16). Jesus is “the light of the human race, the true light that the darkness of evil cannot overcome” (Jn.1:4-5). We, His followers, must be His lamps, reflecting His light to the world in order to dispel the darkness of evil. The brighter our lamp, the more people we can lead to Christ. How do we make our lamps shine to others? Simply by giving witness to the power and love of God that led to our life’s transformation. We must share our life testimony in our breakfast meetings and in our prayer assemblies. For “nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light” (Lk.8:17). Aside from this, we can also shine our light by fighting for the truth, or at the very least, by joining advocacies supporting this campaign. Join the “Advocacy for Honesty Fun Run” sponsored by BCBP East Davao this coming Sunday. There is no doubt that our Brotherhood’s advocacy for honesty and integrity has made inroads in a number of government agencies as well as in the business sector. Many BCBP billboards and streamers in the country’s urban centers declare our stand: “Be Honest even if others are not, even if others will not, even if others cannot.”

“Therefore, consider closely how you listen.” Jesus tells us to be more discerning, to be keenly aware of some grave moral issues dividing us, like the Reproductive Health Bill, that even now some members of the Church hierarchy have been showing their support! Surely the darkness of disobedience is encroaching upon our Church’s door.

Jesus’ message is clear: “To those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.” Unless we fight for honesty and truth, letting the Gospel values shine in our life, we will lose even the veneer of integrity that we appear to possess. Only those who strive to follow His way, spread His truth, and live His life will continue to grow spiritually, gaining more of God’s gifts and graces. Jesus is telling us that we cannot afford to hide our lamp in a vessel, or put it under a bed. We cannot refuse an offer to declare God’s miracle in our life by giving our life testimony, just as we cannot accept bribe money to give a false testimony in court, or justify supporting a law that contravenes life in the name of poverty alleviation. Whether at the podium, in a court of law, or in the halls of congress, we must make His light shine in every opportunity before us.

Lord, fill our hearts and minds with Your light and truth, and disperse the darkness of sin and deception so that we may see the way to You clearly, and discern Your will in our lives. May we radiate your light and truth to others in word and deed. Amen.
