The Plight of the Innocents

Matthew 2: 13-18
1 Jn 1:5–2:2 / Ps 124

A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.
(Matthew 2:18)

Innocents continue to be slain –
In mothers’ wombs, in streets at night.
As innocent must we still remain?
Can’t we fight for their right to life?

When the Magi had departed, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” (Matthew 2:13-18)

Thousands of years have passed since that brutality of King Herod. But today, not only hundreds, but millions of innocent lives, unborn, continue to be slain in abortion clinics all over the world. Many of these unfortunate human beings are/were the offspring of unplanned pre-marital pregnancies, but almost all of them lost their lives in the name of women’s empowerment. What kind of power is that? Who gave King Herod the power to murder those babies? Who gave these women the power to terminate a God-given right to those babies forming in their wombs?

God, in His great love, designed to sanctify the world by creating a soul in every life conceived on earth. Every baby born on earth sanctifies it, just as every abortion performed condemns it.

In the divine order of creation, no life ever happens by mere chance or choice. Every human life that is conceived has the blessing of the Creator, because it is part of His plan. This is what makes abortion so abominable: it not only murders the most vulnerable, most defenseless being created, but subverts the Divine Will.

The famous writer, Pablo Casals, wrote: “Do you know who you are? You’re a marvel. You’re unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you.” Every life on earth is unique, and it is every Christian’s duty to fight for it, especially the life of an innocent being. A society that allows abortion to exist will bear the onus of divine retribution.

Great Source of Life, heal the wounds of abortion that have scarred the beauty of your creation. Forgive its perpetrators, Lord, for they do not know what they are doing. Amen.
