The Mission of Evangelization

Mark 6: 7-13
Heb. 12: 18-19, 21-24 / Ps 48: 2-4,9-11

If any place will not receive you and they refuse to listen to you, leave there, and shake off the dust on your feet in testimony against them. (Mark 6:11)

This mission that Christ has given
Is a privilege from the Lord;
With the promised bliss of heaven,
What else do we need for reward?

Jesus called the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, “Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to listen to you, leave there, and shake off the dust on your feet in testimony against them.” So they went off and preached repentance. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them. (Mark 6: 7-13)

Reflection

All Christians are called to participate in the Great Commission. We discovered this when we joined a charismatic organization in 1997. After our “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”, we felt that we had received a special grace from God to be His witnesses. We became ardent students of the Word of God, spending at least 15 minutes reading the Bible each day. We embraced the discipline of this way of life. Not long after finishing the Brotherhood’s Christian Life Program, we were asked to prepare our personal life testimony, which we would share in one of the community’s weekly breakfast meetings. This was the first step in discipleship, in being sent to preach the Word of God. Indeed we were sent to other chapters and outreaches as well, and gave similar witnessing. This, we found out was the culture of the community that we had learned to love, in imitation of the apostles of our Lord.

Still, the discipline of spiritual formation would continue by being faithful to the culture of the Brotherhood when we took the next big step – encouraging other members to accept the commission themselves – when we were appointed Breakfast Head couple. Finally, the Lord manifested His purpose for us in the Brotherhood when we were appointed to head the mission that opened our outreach in Gen. Santos City in 2002. It is now another thriving Christian community.

God gives us the authority and power to spread the Good News in His behalf. All that He requires from us is our willingness and our faith in Him that the mission will succeed. Jesus gave His disciples the power to heal, exorcise evil spirits and to proclaim the Word of God, “travelling light” without any provisions. God wants us to be dependent on Him and not rely on our own abilities or material possessions. He will provide us with the resources and talents we need to accomplish His will. Are you prepared and willing to be at His service, to reach out to others and give witness to the Gospel and to Christ’s salvation? This is God’s message for us in today’s Gospel. If you have not yet done so, perhaps it is high time for you to prepare your life testimony. As many have testified, you will be blessed by it. Jesus said, “By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples” (Jn.15:8).

Lord, make us channels of Your Word, so that others may also find freedom and truth in Your Gospel. Grant us the gifts of the Holy Spirit that we may become effective witnesses in the continuing mission of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in our lives. Amen.
