Faith and Miracles

Luke 1: 26-38
Is 7: 10-14/ Ps 24: 1-6

Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.
(Luke 1:38)

As Mary had set the example
In serving God with total trust,
If faith be our guiding principle
Then God will surely be with us.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband?” And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Luke 1:26-38)

Reflection

When the Archangel Gabriel brought the news to Mary that she had been chosen to bring the Messiah into the world, the revelation came as a shock to her at first (since she did not understand, and in fact had no relationship with any man). But Gabriel’s soothing words put her at ease. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” And with complete faith, our Blessed Mother said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.”

The Gospel of St. Luke relates a very touching scene where the Virgin Mary acceded to the plan of God, in spite of the dangerous consequences of being found pregnant before her marriage to Joseph. No hesitation, apprehension, doubt or fear – with total trust, from this innocent, peasant maiden, and God honored her to become the Mother of His Son, the greatest miracle since the time of creation. It was her total obedience and faith that endeared her to the Father. Our Lord Jesus once said, “According to your faith it will be done for you” (Mt.8:13). This has always been a powerful principle in life that can work for or against us.

There have been cases of cancer patients whose diseases went into remission after the patients found renewed faith in God’s healing power, to their doctors’ total amazement. Such is the kind of faith that we all need. With complete faith in Jesus Christ, all things are possible for us (Phil.4:13).

Lord God, in all circumstances, may we follow the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom You exalted because of her faith and complete trust in You. Amen.
