Discipleship is Being Sent

Mark 6: 7-13
1Kgs 2:1-4,10-12 / 1Chr 29

If any place will not receive you and they refuse to listen to you, leave there, and shake off the dust on your feet in testimony against them.
(Mark 6:11)

This mission that Christ has given
Is a journey to spread God’s Word;
With the hope of life in heaven,
What more do we need for reward?

Jesus called the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, “Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to listen to you, leave there, and shake off the dust on your feet in testimony against them.” So they went off and preached repentance. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them. (Mark 6:7-13)

Reflection

All Christians are called to do their share in the Great Commission. This was what we learned when we joined a renewal organization called the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP) in 1997. After our “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”, we felt we had received grace from God to be His witnesses. We became ardent students of the Word of God, and embraced the discipline of Christ’s way of life. Not long after finishing the Brotherhood’s Christian Life Program, we were asked to prepare our personal life testimony, which we would share in one of the BCBP’s weekly breakfast meetings. This was the first step in discipleship, in being sent to preach the Word of God. Indeed we were sent to other chapters and outreaches to give similar witnessing.

Still, the discipline of spiritual formation would continue by being faithful to the culture of the Brotherhood, until one day, we took the next big step –accepting the appointment to serve as Breakfast Head. The job entailed encouraging members to accept the commission themselves. Finally, the Lord completed His mission for us in the Brotherhood when we were appointed to head the mission team that opened an outreach in Gen. Santos City in 2002. It is now a full chapter, and will even host the 34th National Anniversary Celebration of BCBP this coming April.

God gives us the authority and power to spread the Good News on his behalf. All that He requires of us is our willingness and the faith that we will succeed. Jesus gave His disciples the power to heal, exorcise evil spirits and to proclaim the Word of God, “travelling light” without any provisions. God wants us to be dependent on Him and not rely on our own abilities or material possessions. He will provide us with the resources and talents we need to accomplish His will. Are you ready and willing to be at His service, to reach out to others and give witness to His truth and salvation? This is God’s message for you in today’s Gospel. May you be blessed by it.

Lord, make us channels of Your Word, so that others may also find freedom and truth in Your Gospel. Grant us the gifts of the Holy Spirit that we may become effective witnesses in our continuing mission for Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
