Signs of the End Times

Luke 21: 20-28
Rv 18:1-2,21-23,19:1-3,9a / Ps 100

At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
(Luke 21:27)

From the endtimes no cause to fear,
The Spirit makes us understand
When signs reveal that Christ is near,
Then our redemption is at hand.

(Jesus said,) “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand.” (Luke 21:20-28)

Fear can be as dangerous as the tragedy being feared. Many have lost their lives because of it. How miserable then it must be to live a life full of fear and anxiety for the future. The people living in the northeastern coast of Japan, which was hit by an 8.4 magnitude earthquake and a 20-meter high tsunami on March 11, 2011, still live in such a condition of terror. Aside from the devastation caused by the tremor and the tidal waves, meltdowns in two nuclear power plants rendered lands within a 20 km radius of these damaged facilities uninhabitable. The residents and business offices of these areas were asked to relocate up to 80 kilometers from the nuclear power plants. Their lives will never be the same again.

People living in the state of sin should be even more fearful of the future than those who have experienced such calamities of nature. Jesus said that when the endtimes come, “People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world” (Lk.21:26). But it shall not be so for those who have accepted the Lord Jesus into their lives. Lately, we have been experiencing low-intensity earthquakes that sometimes last more than ten seconds. Like most environmentalists who are familiar with the global warming phenomenon, we are also concerned with changes in the earth’s atmosphere (especially after seeing the movie “The Day After Tomorrow”). But we are not afraid or alarmed, because we are confident of God’s protection, as He promised in Psalm 91.

People who have made the Holy Scriptures their refuge and “daily Bread” are the only ones who have no cause to “fear the terrors of night” (Ps.91:5), or any danger that may befall them or their loved ones. Instead of fear, when the endtimes come, they shall be full of anticipation for the “coming of the Lord in a cloud with power and great glory” (Lk. 21:27). Are you prepared to meet your Maker?

You are my refuge and my fortress, my Rock in Whom I trust. No evil shall befall me, no plague approach my tent, for You will put me in Your angels’ charge, to guard me in all my ways. Amen. (Psalm 91:2,10,11)
