The Joys of Mary and Elizabeth

Luke 1: 39-45

Sgs 2:8-14 / Psa 33

As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
(Luke 1:44)

In our service, should we feel weary,

Just recall the joy of Mary:

Though pregnant, she rode a donkey

And endured the rocky journey.

At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her!” (Luke 1:39-45)

Mary travelled a great distance to visit her elder cousin Elizabeth. She wasted no time because she could not contain her joy, knowing that both of them were greatly blessed by the Lord, both of them principals in God’s great salvation plan. But upon reaching the house of Zechariah, and greeting her cousin, a strange thing happened. The six-month old baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaped with joy. Elizabeth and her unborn child, John, were even happier than Mary. Why? Because they were in the presence of the Almighty, the promised Redeemer of the world, the King of kings.

Taking an active role in our renewal community’s ministry can be both daunting and exciting at the same time. Daunting when we are asked to share our life testimony, or give talks in far-flung chapters and outreaches (Tagum City, Davao del Norte, Digos City, Davao del Sur, Cagayan de Oro or Bukidnon). Exciting because we believe that the mission of bringing the Word of God is always fulfilling, and will always be fulfilled, and never fails to fill us with joy!

But our commitment to bring the message of God to distant places must surely pale in comparison to the very difficult journey that our Blessed Mother must have endured, riding on the back of a donkey, for over a hundred miles of mostly rugged mountain trail – and pregnant at that – so that she could share the good news with her cousin Elizabeth. It must have taken her more than a few day’s journey. And yet the arduous trip from Nazareth to Hebron was rewarded with much jubilation both to Mary and Elizabeth, and to the unborn baby, John, who leaped in his mother’s womb, unable to contain his joy.

As we come to celebrate the glorious birth of our Lord Jesus, let us glorify Him with His beloved Mother, Mary, who traveled great distances and endured so many hardships so that she could serve and bring the Good News to her cousin and to all the world. With Elizabeth, let us always pray, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb… Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” May our homes be filled with the glad tidings of Christmas on this season of love and hope, just as the Blessed Mother Mary brought joy to Zacharias’ and Elizabeth’s home.

Father God, Your Spirit fills us with rejoicing,
So giving You praise and thanks is only fitting
Especially in this Christmas season.
You have showered us with so much blessings,
You have given the world Your Good Tidings,
And all for love and for our salvation.
