Mystery of Oneness

John 14:7-14
Acts 13:44-52 / Ps 98:1-4

Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me . . .
(John 14: 11)

It’s futile to boggle your mind,
God on earth is a mystery;
It’s in heaven where we will find
The essence of the Trinity.

(Jesus said), “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Indeed, anything you ask for, calling upon my name, I will do it.” (John 14:7-14)

The scene is at the last supper of our Lord with his apostles in the upper room. Many questions were still in their minds. Patiently, Jesus enlightened them: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).. “If you know me, then you will also know my Father… whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

Although it was difficult for the followers of Jesus to understand His words, they had readily accepted that He was indeed the Son of God, by the power of the words that issued from His lips, and the wonders that He had performed. But to be able to see the Father in Jesus Himself, as when Jesus said, “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father,” was a mystery of Oneness that needed wisdom only the Holy Spirit could give. But our Lord knew that He had to make their faith strong first before they could receive the Holy Spirit. So Jesus assured them that those who would believe could work wonders like Him. “Amen, amen I say to you, whoever believes in Me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father” (Jn.14:12). By leaving them, the Father would send the Holy Spirit.

Like His apostles, Jesus also promised us the fullness of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those who are in the Charismatic Renewal. He said, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of Truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, because He remains with you, and will be within you.” (Jn.14:16-17) It is to develop a personal relationship with Him that Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to each one of us. We have done many things that we never imagined we could do before when we had not yet accepted the Holy Spirit in our life.

Lord, help me to know you better, that I may discover Your plan in my life. Help me to believe even if I still cannot understand Your ways, because they are way beyond our ways, as the heavens are far above the earth. Give us the grace to understand that it is enough that You have given us this Faith in Jesus Christ Amen.
