The Feast of the Guardian Angels

by Momong   October 2nd, 2007 [Tuesday]

Matthew 18: 1-5, 10
Ex 23:20-23 / Ps 91

See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly father.
(Matthew 18:10)

Dear Guardian Angel, be my guide
That I may never be misled;
Please always be here at my side,
That only in God’s paths I’ll tread.

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly father. (Matthew 18: 1-5, 10)

Reflection

The Bible is replete with passages confirming the existence of angels who serve as “messengers from heaven”, and protectors of God’s followers. Although the concept of a ‘guardian angel’ assigned to every Christian has not been a definitive doctrine of the Catholic Church, this passage in Matthew 18:10 has been commonly cited by theologians to support this idea. Another verse we can cite is Psalm 91:11: “God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways.” The writer of Hebrews, 1:14 also said: “Are they (angels) not all ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” This inspired St. Jerome to say: “how great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it.” St. Basil the Great taught that “each and every member of the faithful has a guardian angel to protect, guard and guide them through life.” St. Bernard of Clarivaux, who promoted devotion to the guardian angels, cited them as proof “that heaven denies us nothing that assists us”, therefore, “these celestial spirits have been placed at our sides to protect us, instruct us and to guide us.”

In the first reading, God told His Chosen People, “Behold, I send an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place which I have prepared. Give heed to him and hearken to his voice, do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression; for my authority resides in him” (Ex. 23:20-21).

As faithful followers of Chrtist, today’s short Gospel passage gives us the peace of mind and confidence that in facing difficult situations, we can be “trusting little ones” that the Lord guides and protects through the ministry of His holy angels.

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love entrusts you here; ever this day be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Father God, thank You for keeping me safe and free from evil with the presence of my guardian angel. Amen.

The Feast of the Archangels

by Momong   September 29th, 2007 [Saturday]

John 1: 47-51
Dn 7:9-10.13-14 or Rv 12:7-12 / Ps 138

Truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.
(John 1:51)

May God’s angels keep us aware
That not all things are what they seem,
And we can only trust in prayer
To counter Satan’s lying scheme.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’

Reflection

These words of Jesus that end the first chapter of John’s Gospel refer to the dream that the patriarch Jacob had at Bethel when he fled from the rage of his brother Esau. In his dream he saw a ladder reaching up to heaven, and on it thousands of angels were ascending and descending. (Gen.28:12) For acknowledging Jesus as “the Son of God, the King of Israel,” Nathanael was assured of seeing the glory of God in His majestic host of angels as Jacob did in his vision.

Today is a special feast to honor what many people do not give much importance to, either because they don’t believe, or just take for granted the reality of angels. The Bible mentions angels more than 300 times. These celestial beings are spirits created with superior intelligence and will, immortal creatures who serve as God’s messengers, and protectors of men. The most prominent leaders of the angels (called Archangels) are Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Michael is the head of the angelic forces who defeated Satan and his demons. He is revered as the defender of the Church. The archangel Gabriel announced the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah, and to the Virgin Mary proclaimed that she was to become the mother of the Messiah. Raphael is mentioned in the Old Testament book of Tobit as the angel who healed his blindness, and guided and protected his son Tobiah in his travels.

We need to pray to our guardian angel. They are not only God’s messengers, but are there also to intercede for us, and protect us. I believe God’s Word in Psalm 91: “He will put you in His angel’s charge, and guard you wherever you go.” (Ps.91:11)

Saint Michael, Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protector against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. Do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. (Prayer of Pope Leo XIII)
